| Baby carriers put to the test
It can be very tiring to carry your baby in your arms all the time, which is why many parents opt for a soft carrier. Consumer Reports recently tested eight carriers including ones from Baby Bjorn, Infantino, and Kelty Kids to see which ones are best for you and your baby. They were tested for safety, comfort, and ease of use by using a motorized piston that applies 34 kilograms or 75 pounds of force on the carrier. Testers also made sure the leg openings were small enough to keep tiny babies secure using a ball representing the circumference of a three-and-a-half pound baby's hip. The Baby Bjorn Carrier Active was rated as excellent. It sells for 200 dollars. The Baby Bjorn Carrier Original is also rated as excellent and is cheaper at 130 dollars.
Plaza Design stores in escrow
Plaza Design stores in Arcata, McKinleyville and Eureka are in escrow and founder and owner Julie Fulkerson said she is looking forward to quieter days. New owners Jane and Peter Labes currently live in Orange County and intend to move to Humboldt County in June. In the meantime, the couple plan to get to know the staff and community and Fulkerson said she plans on helping them through the ownership transition. Jane is in Humboldt County to finish up on details of the sale and she and Fulkerson are planning to travel together to the New York International Gift Fair at the end of the month. After 25 years as owner, Fulkerson said she has mixed feelings about the sale, but she is definitely ready for a change of pace. "The first thing I'm going to do (when escrow closes) is take a nap," she said laughing, adding that she intends to clean up her office, take classes at Humboldt State University and find more time for playing the violin.
The baby boomers have still got cash to splash
SO the Bank of England has kept interest rates on hold this month. Even better, sky-high domestic gas and electricity bills are set to fall, with anticipation of a summer price war to follow. That should take some of the steam out of rising inflation, might even prevent further rate rises this year. And make us all feel better. In any case, demand in the shops is still booming. Record numbers of us are flying long-haul from Scottish airports. And average house values continue their inexorable rise. In short, in material terms, it looks like we've never had it so good. And bang on cue, a number of magazines and newspapers, including the Economist and the Independent, have been queuing up to tell us so. Sure, there's climate change to worry about. And the state of our pensions.
